The Ballanta Academy of Music, which opened on Oct.25, 1995 has as its goals:


• to teach Music to a high professional standard and to provide opportunities for teachers and learners of Music to enjoy the art of Music


• To research into the musical heritage of Sierra Leone


• To disseminate research on the musical heritage of Sierra Leone.

From its modest beginnings, this unique institution has grown steadily in stature. Its main aim, that of teaching music to a high standard continues to drive its development, seeking always to do the best possible in everything, from teaching beginners to producing oncerts, musicals, festivals and competitions. The Academy is actively including African Dance and Drama in its curriculum and activities as a natural extension of Music studies.

The Academy has courses in the following studies:


Piano, Keyboard, Organ, Recorder, Flute, Voice, Guitar,

Saxophone, Trumpet and other Brass instruments,

Violin, Drums (drumkit), Jazz, African Drums, Theory

of Music. Students are accepted at any level and given

one-to-one tuition on their choice of study.

The Academy is registered with the Ministry of Education, Science & Technology. It is non-profit and is governed by a Board of Directors. It receives a modest subvention from the Government which is not adequate to even cover salaries. Fundraising is required to run the Academy because fees are minimal. Some of our students receive sponsorship from church communities.There is also a Logie Wright Memorial Scholarship Trust Fund which helps needy students pay fees for tuition and examination.
